Country Shapes Quiz: The 10 Countries Everyone Gets Wrong
By the Quiz Zoomies team · October 17, 2026
The country shapes that trip up the most players are small or landlocked countries with no coastline to give them away: Czechia, Austria, Croatia, Laos, Bhutan, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan, Paraguay, Malawi and The Gambia. All ten are in the Impossible level of our Guess the Country by Its Shape video, and each one has a neighbor with a similar outline. Here is the one feature that gives each shape away, so you can beat them in the country shape quiz.
Why shapes are harder than flags
A flag has colors and symbols. An outline is just a line. Big famous shapes like Italy’s boot, Chile’s long ribbon or the United States are easy, but most countries are never seen without their neighbors around them. Cut a country out of the map and spin it a little, and even geography fans hesitate. The trick is to stop looking at the whole outline and find one feature: a tail, a hole, a river, a coast.
1. Czechia (not Slovakia)
What gives it away: Czechia is wide and rounded, almost like a fat leaf, with a curved western half (Bohemia) ringed by mountains. Slovakia, its neighbor, is long and thin from east to west.
Remember it: round is Czechia, stretched is Slovakia.
2. Austria (not Switzerland or Hungary)
What gives it away: a long, narrow tail pointing west toward Switzerland, while the eastern end is broad. Hungary is compact with no tail, and Switzerland is a stubby oval.
Remember it: Austria looks like a frying pan with the handle pointing west.
3. Croatia (not Slovenia or Serbia)
What gives it away: a crescent or boomerang that wraps around Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a long, thin strip running down the Adriatic coast and hundreds of islands off it.
Remember it: if the shape bends around an empty middle, it is Croatia.
4. Laos (not Vietnam or Cambodia)
What gives it away: Laos is the only landlocked country in Southeast Asia, so there is no coastline at all. It is long and twisted from north to south, wider at the top and narrow in the middle. Vietnam, right next to it, is the long S-shape with the coast.
Remember it: Laos is Vietnam’s inland twin, the jagged piece on its left.
5. Bhutan (not Nepal)
What gives it away: a small, chunky blob tucked into the Himalayas between China and India. Nepal is much longer and narrower.
Remember it: Bhutan is the short one, Nepal the long one.
6. Nepal (not Bhutan or Bangladesh)
What gives it away: a long, slanted rectangle, about 800 to 900 km from east to west but less than 250 km from north to south, sloping down to the southeast like a tilted brick.
Remember it: Nepal is a long brick lying along the top of India.
7. Kyrgyzstan (not Tajikistan)
What gives it away: a wide shape with a big bite out of its southwest, where the border curves around the Fergana Valley. Tajikistan, just to the south, has a thin arm reaching north into that same valley.
Remember it: Kyrgyzstan is the one with the bite taken out of it.
8. Paraguay (not Uruguay or Bolivia)
What gives it away: Paraguay is landlocked and split in two by the Paraguay River: a wide, flat western half (the Chaco) and a smaller eastern half. Uruguay is rounder, smaller and has a coast on the Atlantic and the Río de la Plata.
Remember it: Paraguay has two halves and no coast; Uruguay is the round one by the sea.
9. Malawi (not Zambia or Mozambique)
What gives it away: a long, thin country running north to south, with Lake Malawi along most of its eastern side. The lake covers about a fifth of the country’s area.
Remember it: a skinny strip with a big lake beside it is Malawi.
10. The Gambia (not Senegal)
What gives it away: a thin finger of land following the Gambia River inland from the Atlantic coast. It is the smallest country on mainland Africa and is surrounded by Senegal on every side except the sea.
Remember it: a country that is basically a river with banks is The Gambia.
How to get better at country shapes
- Learn by continent. Our shape quizzes for Europe and Asia let you focus on one region until the outlines feel familiar.
- Name the one feature out loud. “Tail to the west, Austria.” A spoken rule sticks better than a picture.
- Check the coast first. Landlocked or not cuts the choices in half straight away.
- Watch the video, then play. The Guess the Country by Its Shape video has 50 outlines from Easy to Impossible with a 10-second timer, and its page lists every answer. Then try the country shape quiz here and see how many you can name without help.
