US State Capitals Quiz

This quiz asks for the capital of all 50 US states. Each question names a state and you pick its capital from four choices, or type it in hard mode. Watch out: the wrong choices include famous big cities like Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles.

How to play: tap the capital or press 1 to 4. Play 10, 20 or all 50 states. The capitals follow the official list of the 50 state governments, and the trap answers are well known cities of the same state that are not the capital.

Frequently asked questions

How many state capitals are there in the US?

50, one for each state. Washington, D.C. is the capital of the whole country, but it is a federal district, not a state, so it is not in this quiz.

Why are so many state capitals not the biggest city?

Many capitals were picked for being central or neutral when the state was young, so famous cities often lost out. New York's capital is Albany, California's is Sacramento, Illinois's is Springfield, Pennsylvania's is Harrisburg, Florida's is Tallahassee and Texas's is Austin.

What is the smallest and the largest state capital?

Montpelier, Vermont is the smallest state capital by population, with fewer than 10,000 people. Phoenix, Arizona is the largest, with about 1.6 million.

Which state capitals are named after presidents?

Four: Jefferson City, Missouri (Thomas Jefferson), Lincoln, Nebraska (Abraham Lincoln), Madison, Wisconsin (James Madison) and Jackson, Mississippi (Andrew Jackson).

Can I type the capitals instead?

Yes. Hard mode below the multiple choice game asks the same 50 states and you type the capital. Capitals, accents and punctuation do not matter, and St. Paul counts for Saint Paul.
